What are Dental Implants?

In the event of losing a tooth, you may be presented with the idea or option of undergoing the process of receiving a dental implant. For medical reasons, receiving this type of implant is of vital importance. As we age – and as our teeth age – our jaw shape, facial shape, and overall health are affected by our teeth. Aside from the cosmetic reasons for having a full set of teeth, our ability to eat and maintain proper nutrition becomes challenging with missing teeth.

Additionally, as our jaw and face changes, the other teeth are prone to shift without that tooth there. As they spread further apart, their roots become lose and we wind up losing more teeth. Without teeth, youthfulness is also lost. Sometimes, correcting teeth with dental implants is a better, more long-term option for regaining youthful appearances and even full lips. If you’ve lost a tooth due to an accident, or even from decay, dental implants are a wonderful option for maintaining a full set of teeth and keeping a healthy smile.

Dental implants often start with metal devices surgically implanted into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. It has been designed to act as the root of the missing tooth, and unlike dental bridges, is a permanent anchor for a prosthetic tooth. Thankfully, during the procedure your doctor will try to decrease your discomfort and pain levels with anesthesia, IV sedation, or other medications.

Possible complications from dental implants may include: infection of the bones and gums, rejection of the implant, bone loss, and failure to adhere to the bone. Like a real tooth, your implant must be properly cared for and maintained, and you must regularly check in with the dentist (about every 6 months). Unfortunately, teeth are not something we can forget about and expect them to take care of themselves. Neglecting your teeth is worse than facing the issues directly, because problems are usually not obvious to you until it is too late.

If you suspect you have a cavity or need dental treatment, don’t wait! You should see your dentist at least twice a year, or more. For a dental appointment in the St. Paul area, call Hagerman Dental Care, office of Steven R. Hagerman, DDS at (651)-646-2392, or schedule an appointment online.
